Are Flawed Studies Inflating Long COVID Prevalence?

0

The landscape of COVID-19 research is as dynamic as the virus itself, with new discoveries constantly reshaping our understanding of the disease. One recent revelation has turned the spotlight onto the potential consequences of using antiviral drugs to combat the virus, suggesting that such treatments might inadvertently fuel its evolution. Scientists argue that antiviral use could be increasing the genetic diversity of the virus, paving the way for future adaptations and challenges. This revelation prompts us to take a closer look at another aspect of the pandemic: long COVID.

Long COVID, a condition characterized by lingering symptoms after the acute phase of COVID-19 infection, has been a subject of intense research and public concern. Several studies have estimated the prevalence of post-COVID symptoms to range from 25% to 45%. However, a group of US scientists has raised questions about the validity of these studies.

In a compelling opinion piece published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, these researchers argue that many long COVID studies suffer from “overly broad definitions,” “methodological flaws,” and a “striking absence of control groups.” According to them, these shortcomings have led to a vast overestimation of the prevalence of long COVID, contributing to unwarranted public anxiety.

Andreas Stallmach, the head of the long COVID Center at Jena University Hospital in Germany, acknowledges the importance of this publication, stating, “The first thesis put forward by the authors is that the frequency of long COVID is overestimated. I partially agree with that.”

One of the central issues highlighted by the piece is the lack of consistent terminology surrounding long COVID and its related post-COVID syndromes and symptoms. Health organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have not mandated a causal link between COVID-19 and a long COVID diagnosis. The authors of the opinion piece point out that many studies fail to confirm a prior COVID-19 infection in patients included in long COVID research, raising questions about the validity of their inclusion.

X Tops List for Disinformation on Social Networks, EU Study Finds

0

A recent study commissioned by the European Commission has revealed that X, formerly known as Twitter, has the highest proportion of disinformation among six major social networks. The study, which analysed over 6,000 unique social media posts across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, and YouTube, focused on three countries deemed particularly vulnerable to disinformation: Spain, Poland, and Slovakia.

According to the study, Twitter had the largest “ratio of discoverability” of disinformation, indicating that a significant portion of sensitive content on the platform consisted of misleading or false information. In contrast, YouTube had the lowest proportion of disinformation.

Vera Jourova, the EU’s Values and Transparency Commissioner, issued a warning to X, emphasising the need for the platform to comply with existing regulations. She stated, “My message for [X] is: you have to comply with the hard law. We’ll be watching what you’re doing.” This study is part of ongoing efforts to support the EU’s code of practice on disinformation.

X, previously known as Twitter, had initially signed up for the voluntary code of practice on disinformation in 2018, along with several other social networks. However, the company withdrew from the code during Elon Musk’s leadership. Despite this withdrawal, X will be subject to the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which regulates the conduct of major tech platforms. The EU intends to transition the voluntary code into a legally binding code of conduct under the DSA.

The study’s findings come amid concerns about the spread of disinformation, particularly in the context of Russian disinformation campaigns related to the Ukraine conflict. The EU has accused social media companies of failing to curb these campaigns, and Jourova stressed the need for large social media platforms to address this risk, as it poses a serious threat to democracy.

Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the upcoming European elections, addressing disinformation is considered a pressing issue. The EU is also actively working to tackle AI-generated disinformation in preparation for these elections, with discussions involving organisations like OpenAI.

Gymnastics Ireland Faces Controversy Over Alleged Racial Discrimination During the Medal Ceremony

0

Gymnastics Ireland found itself embroiled in a racial discrimination controversy after a viral video emerged showing a young black girl allegedly being excluded from a medal ceremony while her white counterparts received awards. The incident, which occurred in March of the previous year, has sparked outrage and concerns over racial bias within the sporting body.

The video, widely circulated, captures the moment when young gymnasts eagerly awaited their medals. To the shock of many, the black girl was seemingly overlooked and left without an award. While Gymnastics Ireland claimed to have resolved the issue last year, the girl’s family asserts that they never received a genuine apology.

The girl’s mother expressed deep upset over the incident and believes that her daughter was treated unfairly due to her race. Furthermore, it was noted that the person responsible for distributing the medals chose to walk away with the remaining medal rather than address the omission.

Simone Biles, the celebrated gymnast, was moved by the incident and reached out to the girl, offering words of encouragement and support. Biles emphasised that there is no place for racism in sports or anywhere else.

Amidst a public outcry, Gymnastics Ireland eventually issued an apology for the incident. In a statement, they expressed their regret for the distress caused to the gymnast and her family, acknowledging that what occurred should never have happened. The sporting body pledged to take meaningful action, including engaging with independent experts to review their policies and procedures and working closely with the gymnast’s family and Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI) to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Gymnastics Ireland affirmed its condemnation of all forms of racism and expressed its commitment to ensuring a fair and inclusive environment for all participants. Despite the controversy, the gymnast continues to participate in events, demonstrating resilience and determination to overcome adversity.

Hollywood writers reach an agreement, ending a lengthy US studio strike.

0

Screenwriters in the United States are reportedly on the verge of ending a nearly five-month strike following a tentative deal reached with studio executives, marking what the Writers Guild of America (WGA) calls an “exceptional” agreement with significant benefits and protections for writers. The final decision lies with WGA members.

This strike has been the longest affecting Hollywood in decades and has disrupted a substantial portion of film and TV production. Concurrently, actors are also involved in a separate dispute, resulting in a severe impact on the entertainment industry.

The strike, which commenced on May 2, is estimated to have cost the US economy around $5 billion, according to economist Kevin Klowden of the Milken Institute. Numerous popular TV shows, including “The Last of Us,” “Billions,” “Stranger Things,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Hacks,” “Severance,” “Yellow Jackets,” “Abbott Elementary,” and various daytime and late-night talk shows, have been brought to a halt.

Among the concerns that led to the strike were issues surrounding writer compensation, the potential impact of artificial intelligence replacing their roles, staffing levels, and the royalty payments writers receive for streaming shows, which are considerably lower than those from broadcast TV.

Traditionally, writers would receive additional payments for broadcast network repeats, but this model was disrupted by the rise of streaming platforms. As a result, the current compensation structures include an amount meant to offset the loss of royalties from broadcast repeats.

Before returning to work, the WGA leadership and union members must reach an agreement on a three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. While the strike has not been officially called off, the WGA has suspended its picketing activities.

Late-night talk show staff may return to work shortly, and broadcasts could potentially resume in October. However, the union’s negotiating committee has urged members to exercise patience as they work on finalising the details of the agreement and contract language. They are enthusiastic about sharing the results achieved once everything is officially settled.

Authors George RR Martin and John Grisham Sue OpenAI over copyright

0

Authors George RR Martin and John Grisham, famous for their literary works, have initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, claiming copyright infringement during the system’s training process.

George RR Martin, renowned for his fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, which inspired the Game of Thrones television series, and John Grisham, a bestselling author known for his legal thrillers, are among the prominent authors named in the complaint. The Authors Guild, a US trade group representing these authors, has brought the case to the federal court in Manhattan, New York.

The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) used the authors’ books without permission to enhance their AI capabilities. These AI models “learn” by analysing vast datasets, often sourced from online content.

OpenAI responded by stating that it respects the rights of authors and believes they should benefit from AI technology. The case mirrors similar legal actions, such as comedian Sarah Silverman’s lawsuit in July and an open letter signed by authors like Margaret Atwood and Philip Pullman calling for AI companies to compensate authors for using their work.

The lawsuit highlights a broader concern within the media industry regarding AI technology potentially “displacing human-authored” content. Patrick Goold, a law expert, noted that the authors’ main concern may not be copyright but the impact of AI on creative professions.

While sympathy lies with the authors, legal experts believe it’s unlikely the lawsuit will succeed unless they can prove ChatGPT copied and duplicated their work. The broader discussion centres on AI’s impact on the creative arts and the need for regulatory discussions in Parliament and Congress regarding AI’s role in displacing human labour in various industries.

This case is part of a growing number of complaints against developers of generative AI, where artificial intelligence creates media based on text prompts. It underscores the complexities and challenges of defining copyright infringement in the age of AI-generated content.

Indie Music Star Sufjan Stevens Struggles With Rare Autoimmune Disorder

0

Renowned indie musician Sufjan Stevens has revealed that he has lost the ability to walk due to a diagnosis of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare autoimmune condition that targets the nerves.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, the singer-songwriter shared his recent health battle, explaining that he had been driven to the hospital by his brother. Medical professionals performed a battery of tests, including MRIs, CAT scans, and a spinal tap, before confirming the diagnosis of Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder, affecting roughly one person in 100,000 annually. While its precise causes remain unknown, it is often triggered by infections.

According to the NHS, most patients recover within a year, but recovery may necessitate several months of hospitalisation and treatment.

Sufjan Stevens revealed that he has been in an acute rehabilitation facility since September 8, where he undergoes intense physical therapy, occupational therapy, and strength-building exercises to regain mobility.

He maintained hope, saying, “Most people who have GBS learn to walk again on their own within a year, so I am hopeful.”

Sufjan Stevens is a highly acclaimed independent musician known for his intricate musical compositions and poetic lyrics. He gained recognition through an ambitious project to create an album for each of the 50 U.S. states, although only two were completed. His work delves into personal themes, including the loss of his mother in “Carrie & Lowell” (2015) and his struggles with love and faith in “Ascension” (2020).

Despite his health setback, Stevens is preparing to release his ninth album, “Javelin,” next month. He explained to his fans that the delay in promoting the album was due to his unexpected medical condition.

“I’m only in my second week of rehab, but it is going really well, and I am working really hard to get back on my feet,” he said, expressing his determination to recover. He also thanked his fans for their support and praised healthcare professionals as “living saints” for their tireless efforts in helping people heal.

The Japanese PM offers direct talks with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

0

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has made a public declaration of his willingness to engage in direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, emphasising Japan’s commitment to a diplomatic approach amid mounting tensions related to North Korea’s nuclear weapons programs. Kishida restated this offer during his address at the United Nations General Assembly, underscoring Japan’s readiness to address all outstanding issues with North Korea.

Kishida expressed, “In the spirit of opening a new chapter together, I wish to convey my unwavering determination to meet President Kim Jong Un in person, at any time, and without any preconditions.” He stressed his eagerness to conduct high-level discussions under his direct supervision, with the goal of arranging a summit meeting in the near future.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Hirokazu Matsuno, echoed this commitment, stating that Japan seeks high-level discussions directly overseen by the prime minister to facilitate a summit meeting as soon as possible. Kishida has consistently expressed his resolve to engage with Kim without imposing any prerequisites.

It is notable that former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited Pyongyang in 2002 during his tenure, where he held talks with Kim Jong Un’s father, Kim Jong Il. This diplomatic effort resulted in the return of five Japanese nationals to Japan. However, subsequent negotiations faced challenges and roadblocks.

The United States, under President Joe Biden’s administration, has also extended invitations for talks with North Korea, although North Korea has shown limited interest in these overtures. In contrast, former U.S. President Donald Trump held a historic summit with Kim Jong Un and publicly expressed admiration for him.

Kishida’s statement reflects Japan’s proactive approach to diplomatic engagement with North Korea, emphasising its commitment to seeking peaceful resolutions to regional issues. While diplomatic efforts with North Korea have often faced challenges and uncertainties, Japan continues to demonstrate its dedication to dialogue and negotiations.
